My daughter, Grace, just turned thirteen. Always a free-spirit and a dreamer, Grace puts her imagination into her writing. Yesterday, with Halloween approaching, her class was asked to write a short, scary story. Since Grace loves projects such as these, she came home and anxiously poured her heart into the keyboard for about 30 minutes and returned with this story. I find it quite entertaining and hope you will too. 🙂
Tricks are Not a Treat in the Temple of Doom
Old paper Halloween pumpkins drifted across the streets of Florida on this Halloween night. People in costumes littered the crowded side walks up and down the line of houses in the most popular neighborhoods. Peggy, Amanda, and Rose pushed through the crowd of people. Amanda (the scarecrow) took the lead with Rose (the fortune teller) trailing closely behind. Lastly was Peggy, who had no time to get a costume, dressed in fancy clothes and intense makeup, dragging Max the dog behind her in his plushy pumpkin vest. The trick-or-treaters walked around the girls as they took their time to walk around the neighborhoods.
Across the street was a brand new building, specially for Halloween adventures. In the shape of an old jungle temple. the attraction looked like a haunted mansion, but was built as a party center. The three girls wandered inside towards the tattered “happy Halloween” banner. As soon as they stepped through the door, they were in awe. The entire room was built out of mossy gray stone, with pillars running from the ground to the ceiling. Immediately, the owner of the “temple,” Maxine, rushed to greet the new guests. She informed them that they were right on time and announced to the crowd that everyone could join her in the back room for one last Halloween surprise. The three girls and about five others that heard them over the loud music, rushed to the back door to claim their spots for the surprise.
When everyone in the small group arrived in the back room, they sensed danger. What was a good time, was now a death trap. They could smell the must on the walls, this was a real temple. They turned around to leave when they heard the slight click of the the door being locked behind them. Maxine had abandoned them in the room on purpose. The others pounded on the heavy iron door behind them, but with no luck. The music was too loud for the others to hear their cries. Before them, the girls saw the terrible traps that led to a painful death. They knew that the door wan not going to open and they needed to cross the traps, assuming there was a door on the other side. Amanda and Rose leaned over the dark pit in front of them and noticed slimy, colorful snakes slithering over the crowded bottom. Amanda decided that they must be poisonous, examining their vibrant colors. Pillars of crumbly stone were scattered across the pit. They needed to jump across them.
Peggy realized what was going on and knew Max couldn’t make it with them. She was reluctant to let him stay, in fear he might fall into the pit. She finally decided to leave her in the care of the other victims, promising Max and the other people that they would come back for them once the journey was over. Gathering up ther courage, the girls sprang into action, daringly jumping across the unstable pillars, barely making it to the other side with their lives. The next obstacle was unapparent at first sight, until Rose noticed the open holes in the walls from the floor to the ceiling, Peggy observed slightly raised platforms scattered on the ground in front of them. Amanda inquired that there could be darts or arrows in the walls that would shoot out when the pressure pads were stepped on. The three girls walked across, careful not to step on the pressure pads. Peggy clutched Max’s collar in her fingers and kept it in case something happened to him. Peggy took a brief moment to scan Max’s tag, stopping in her tracks behind Rose and Amanda, who were still navigating their way to the trapped hallway. Peggy rushed to catch up, dropping Max’s collar on a pile nearby, the girls watched in horror as the tile sank into the floor. Peggy grabbed Max’s collar and ran along with Rose and Amanda. They made it out just in time, but they celebrated to soon, for Peggy tripped on one of the pressure pads and the darts fired as soon as she hit the ground. She was mostly out of the hallway, but her leg was stuck. She lifted her leg on instinct to the pain and a dart sunk into her calf.
Rose and Amanda made it out of the hall in time, but they stared in terror as a welt appeared where the dart hit Peggy. Peggy threw Max’s collar to Rose and told them to leave her. But, they refused to let her die. Amanda yanked the dart out of Peggy’s leg and watched as the welt darkened in color from the poison in the needles of the darts. Rose an Amanda pulled Peggy to her feet and walked towards the next trap, in front of them was a deep, dark pit that appeared to have no end. One by one, the girls leapt across the rickety rope bridge laid out in front of them.
Peggy first, then Rose, then Amanda. Peggy limped slowly, weakening the bridge a considerable amount. Rose got across quickly and fine. Amanda sprinted across the wooden planks and her foot broke the last plank and her leg fell through. The rope unraveled from the other side of the pit and the bridge fell behind Amanda. Amanda grabbed on to the side of the cliff with her two hands, and shook her leg free from the wooden plank. Rose helped her clamber to the ground. In front of the girls was a huge archway that led to the outside. They ran through and back to the front of the building to go in and rescue the others and Max. They found a vile in the ground labeled “dart antidote.” They assumed that Maxine left it there in case she got poisoned by her own traps. Peggy finished off the golden liquid inside and the swelling on her leg went down instantly, leaving her with a pink patch of skin on her calf. The girls burst inside and ran to the back door. They kept Rose outside to open the door if it got locked again. Rose opened the heavy iron door for them and let all of the other victims out. Peggy came out last, carrying Max in her arms. His collar fastened loosely around his neck.
The girls called the police and reported Maxine. She had apparently been a wanted criminal for setting up these traps for her entertainment. The police took her away and evacuated the party immediately. The temple was torn down to rubble by the next day and the snakes were given to multiple zoos across the states. Peggy, Amanda, and Rose, slit a 5o thousand dollar reward that they received for catching and reporting Maxine. They all went back to their normal lives in Florida, happily knowing that Maxine couldn’t hurt anyone anymore.
